“[Royal commissions] often go on for years, as the presiding commissioner not uncommonly seeks extensions.
They are also extremely costly. The fees charged by commissioners, counsels assisting and the associated secretariat are very substantial. The fact that the legal fees of all those who appear before a royal commission are picked up by the taxpayers, at least in part, also adds significantly to the cost.
It is estimated that the recently completed royal commission into misconduct in the banking, superannuation and financial services industry cost $1 billion.”
