Leader of the opposition in Victoria

Matthew Guy was elected as the Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Parliamentary Liberal Party in December 2014.

First elected to Parliament in November 2006, Matthew was re-elected in 2010. In the 2014 election, Matthew successfully stood for the seat of Bulleen in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.

Like many Victorians, half of Matthew’s family immigrated to this country to find a better way of life. Born and raised in Greensborough, Matthew went to Montmorency High School and then worked part-time to put his way through university. Matthew has a Bachelor of Arts in politics and history from La Trobe University and has completed post graduate studies in Ukrainian language and culture at Monash University.

Prior to becoming a Member of Parliament, Matthew had a variety of jobs including representing agricultural interests at the Victorian Farmers Federation, as well as working in the finance industry as a manager at the Australian Securities and Investment Commission. He also worked in a number of political roles including for then Premier Jeff Kennett and the former Federal Assistant Treasurer.

In December 2010 he was appointed Victorian Minister for Planning and in March 2014 he was appointed Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship. These are two issues that Matthew is particularly passionate about – building a better, stronger Victoria that creates jobs, opportunity and improves the way we live, and celebrating Victoria’s vibrant, multicultural community.

Matthew is married to Renae and they have three children – Joseph, Samuel and Alex. He enjoys taking his sons to AusKick and he is a member of Plenty Valley FM, the St Kilda Football Club and the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

To relax, Matthew enjoys running and exercising as well as cycling with his children.
